Look for a local SEM person that can come to your office for meetings.Its harder to give bad news in person. If they know they have to face you, they’ll work harder to make it work!

Excellent post Jon. I’d say the shorthand for this is to look for the three R’s: results, reputation and references. The first is obvious (if an SEO has no successes to point to, he/she needs to find another niche in life).

The second covers ethical treatment of clients and using only white hat practices, as well as issues like: has the person ever written an SEO article or blog post?

The final one is obvious as well and the most important – offering up the names of satisfied clients one can talk to.
